Oklahoma Baptist won five events with two meet records but its reign atop the NAIA Indoor Track world came to an end Saturday as the Lady Bison finished third in the national meet in Johnson City, Tenn.
The 2005 national champion Lady Bison crowned four event champions and had 21 All-Americans. The Bison finished sixth in the men's standings with one national event title and 18 All-Americans.
The Lady Bison were dethroned by a mammoth performance by Missouri Baptist, who won with 172 points, followed by Simon Fraser at 92 and OBU at 82. The men were sixth with 35 points, trailing champion Lindenwood (94.5), Virginia Intermont (81), Dickinson State (68), Azusa Pacific (55.5) and Concordia, Neb. (37).
Lamar Baskin claimed the only men's event title with his 8.09 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles.
OBU's Mirriam Kaumba closed out her career with one more national title and three more All-America honors. She won the 3000 meters with a new meet record of 9:30.06. She also was third in the mile run at 4:50.71.
She teamed up with Emily Haynes, Lesli Polman and Jessica Haynes for an All-America fourth-place finish in the distance medley relay. Kaumba has exhausted her eligibility for outdoor track.
Kyli Bean picked up two national titles and a meet record of her own. The junior from Choctaw won the 600 meters in a meet-record 1:32.35. She also led off the national champion mile relay team with Chandra Huckabay, Kyta Willets and Nickiesha Wilson in a time of 3:46.85.
LaToya Greaves captured the national title in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.42 seconds with Wilson coming in fifth at 8.65 seconds.
Wilson was second in two other events, finishing the 200 meters in 24.6 seconds and the 400 in 54.79.
Kyta Willets and her husband, Landon, had outstanding times in their meets and both would have had meet records against most other competition.
Kyta bested the old meet record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.93, but finished second to Missouri Baptist's Margaret Nakinta, who set the new mark at 2:07.17.
A Missouri Baptist runner also broke the record in the men's 1000 meters to hand Landon Willets third. Willets' time of 2:24.67 was better than the old record as well.
Mai Fukada rounded out Saturday's All-America performances for the OBU women, placing sixth in the triple jump at 38 feet. Michelle Carpenter was eighth in the high jump at 5-3.
The men's 4x400 relay team of Derek Nettles, E.J. Rusher, Leonarde Smith and T.J. Lightsey was fourth in 3:15.87.
B.J. Bashorun was fifth in the men's 60 meters with an All-American time of 6.95 seconds.
