Columbia, Mo. – The University of Tulsa men\'s and women\'s track teams
began the 2006 Indoor Track season on Friday, posting 18 top-five marks
at the 19th Annual Missouri Invitational at the Hearnes Center
Fieldhouse in Columbia, Mo.
\"I am pleased with our performance,\" Head Coach Steve Gulley said. \"We
are a young team. I am happy with how we opened the season. Now we need
to build off of that experience.\"
Juniors Shameka Holloway and Chantelle Willard registered the third-
and
fourth-best performances in the 400-meter dash with times of 57.84 and
58.12, respectively. In the 600-yard run, freshman April Montgomery
turned in the fifth-best time, 1:25.94, for a personal-record.
Freshman Alex Becker recorded the top mark in the 1,000-meter run in a
time of 2:57.65, for a personal-record and a second-place mark on the
school\'s all-time record chart. Classmate Marissa Saunders tallied a
second-place finish with a time of 3:00.85 for the school\'s fifth-best
all-time performance and a personal-record, while sophomore Breanna
Chipney notched a time of 3:05.07 for a fifth-place mark.
Senior Renine Le Heron captured a top finish in the 3,000-meter run
with
a time of 10:08.76, a personal-best and TU\'s fifth-best all-time
record.
She broke her previous personal-best by 13 seconds.
The women\'s 4x400m relay team, consisting of Willard, Holloway,
Montgomery and junior Shantel Girtley, turned in a second-place
performance in a time of 3:54.32. The Tulsa `A\' women\'s distance medley
team, Becker, junior Margaret Glover, freshman Dawn Nagazina and senior
Lise Olivier, registered a second-place mark in a time of 12:08.08,
while the Tulsa `B\' team, Saunders, sophomore Amy Reeves, freshman
Petrina Lamb and Chipney, finished fifth with a time of 12:43.17.
Sophomore Sophia Rodriguez claimed a fifth-place 11.60m (38-00.75 feet)
mark in the triple jump, for TU\'s second-best performance in school
history. The top mark is held by Rodriguez, a jump of 39-7.25 feet set
last year at the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
Junior-transfer Stephanie Jeffers notched a first-place mark in the
women\'s shot put with a throw of 14.65m (48-00.75 feet), and a
fourth-place performance in the women\'s weight throw, 16.51m
(54-02.00).
Both marks are personal-bests and school records.
On the men\'s side, sophomore O\'Dell Smith claimed a fifth-place finish
in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.91, while junior Rickey Wilson,
Jr., registered a time of 8.39 in the 60-meter hurdles for a
fifth-place
performance.
In the men\'s distance medley, Tulsa `A\', juniors Andrew Beard and
Mathew
Musengezi, sophomore Jordan Hughes and freshman Eric Harris, recorded a
time of 10:41.72 for a third-place mark. The Tulsa `B\' team, sophomores
Brett Turowski, Jason Schweitzer and Jay Matlack, and junior Edwin
Henshaw, tallied a fourth-place finish in a time of 10:43.18.
Freshman Robert Nickels earned a fifth-place mark with a 6.89m
(22-07.25
feet) long jump, the fifth-best jump in school history and a
personal-best.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action on January 20-21 at the
Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
