Tulsa, Okla. – The University of Tulsa cross country men's and women's
teams will open the 2005 season at home with the annual Hurricane Cross
Country Festival at Mohawk Park on Saturday, September 3.
The collegiate section of the festival starts with the men's race at
8:00 a.m., followed by the women at 8:30 a.m. Teams from Central
Oklahoma, Missouri State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State will compete in
addition to the Golden Hurricane.
"I am excited about beginning the season," said Head Coach Steve
Gulley.
"This will be our chance to see how much work we have done throughout
the year as we look toward November."
The TU men have claimed the past five consecutive team titles, while
junior Jason Schweitzer posted last years top finish with a
second-place
mark in a time of 21:06. Sophomore Brett Turowski registered a
third-place finish with a time of 21:17, while teammate Joel Stansloski
recorded a fourth-place mark in a time of 21:24.
On the women's side, Tulsa finished second as the Cowgirls of Oklahoma
State took the team title. Sophomore Breanna Chipney notched the best
finish for a returning Golden Hurricane, finishing eighth with a time
of
11:53, while teammate Renine Le Heron finished 10th with a time of
12:01.
Area high schools will begin racing at 9:00 a.m. with the freshmen,
sophomores, juniors and seniors all competing in separate races. The
junior high schools and middle schools will compete at 10:50 a.m.
