CU\'s Chirchir wins FOY, finishes 4th at LSC

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (October 24) – The Cameron Cross Country team traveled to Stephenville, Texas over the weekend to compete in the Lone Star Conference Championship meet. The team finished in seventh place out of the nine schools that participated, with freshman David Chirchir taking fourth-place overall. Abilene Christian won the event.

"I'm very happy," head coach Matt Aguero said. "It was the best I've seen David (Chirchir) run and I'm definitely pleased with how we ran as a team, especially with our number two and three runners out." Freshmen George Njuguna (stress fracture) and Sean Richmond (lower leg) are both still out with injuries.

Chirchir's amazing season was recognized at the event as he was awarded the title of Freshman of the Year and was named to the 2006 LSC All-Conference team. His time of 24:38 was just five seconds behind the winner (Naimadu, Nicodemus, Abilene Christian) and is a new personal and Cameron University record for an 8-kilometer race. This marks the second meet in a row in which Chirchir set a new Aggie Cross Country record.

"If David runs at Regionals like he did at Conference, I definitely think he can make it to Nationals," Coach Aguero said.

Freshman Ben Ware finished at No. 46 overall, and broke the 30-minute barrier (29:44) for the first time. Freshmen Jon McMasters (30:37) and Guy Narcomey (30:40) finished at No. 49 and 50, respectively. Newcomer sophomore Bira Vidal finished at No. 59 with a time of 34:58.

The Aggie Cross Country team travels to Warrensburg, Missouri on November 4th to compete in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships. The race will be 10-kilometers.
