Dominic Matthias is one of the premier distance runners in Oklahoma. He is a defending champion in the 3200m and XC. As a freshman, Matthias had an outstanding season that put himself towards the top of the all time freshman rankings for an Oklahoman. Now time has passed, and he's in his second semester of his sophomore year. Last fall Matthias dominated the state XC meet and recorded multiple sub 15 times in route to an NXN appearance.
After his season, he didn't wait long to get into indoor track. Running a plethora of indoor meets, the Moore High School sophomore recorded some of the all time best marks for an Oklahoman.
In January Matthias attended the Texas High School Indoor Championship, the Washburn Be Your Best #2, and the Oklahoma Indoor Championships.
At these meets he recorded a 2 mile time of 9:08.70 - a new indoor state record for Oklahoma. At a similar distance (the 3000m) Matthias ran 8:38.89 at Washburn. These times put him as a likely favorite to break 9 minutes in the 3200m this outdoor season.
Also in January, Matthias ran 4:17.08 in the 1 mile run at Washburn, winning the race. This was a highly competitive time, and it looks like Matthias has not missed a beat since XC.
At the Oklahoma Indoor meets, Matthias ran 4:20 three times. Yes, three times exactly. That is impressive, but I also find it interesting that 4:20 may just feel like clockwork for him at this point in his high school career. Matthias holds the indoor state record at this distance with 4:20.06.
After a successful January the Moore sophomore attended the Nike Indoor Nationals where he had a number of high level performances. His 4:12.41 in the 1 mile run was an Oklahoma indoor state record, and places him within a few seconds of the outdoor state record in the 1600m.
Along with his 1600m performance, Matthias also ran the 1500m in 3:55.59. A new personal best and more evidence that the 1600m state record could go down this season.
Lastly, Matthias managed to run 14:16.42 in the 5k to place 3rd overall in the country. This is the premier Matthias performance of the Indoor season. He set the state record and this high of a placement for an Oklahoman at a national meet is huge for the state!
Stay tuned for Dominic Matthias' outdoor season as he continues to aim to get faster. He is one of many distance runners in Oklahoma who have made massive improvements from the following season, so it is surely going to be a competitive close to the season.
