State Leaderboard: Boys 4/22/2024

    As we near the end of the 2024 regular season we wanted to drop one last leaderboard update for y'all to see where your favorite athletes from across the state stack up. We are 10 days away from small school state and another 7 days from large school state. I don't foresee the following lists changing tremendously over that time as most teams will be preparing for the big dance with a touch of rest and some sharpening of their skills.  I would approximate that our data is 95% complete so some notable exclusions may be present. Sprints/Hurdles

    2024 has seen the emergence of Jenks hurdle ace Dean Mccune who was the #3 returner  in the boys 110mh but now holds the state lead in the 110mh at 14.13 and 300mh at 37.75. Mccune is currently undefeated against his instate rivals including defending 300mh champ Aiden Edwards of Mustang, Sam Strauss of Edmond Memorial, and 5a Coweta's Brendan Badie. 

    In the flat sprints the recent emergence of Bristows Gage Spencer lowered the state lead down below 10.4 for the first time this season with his best of 10.39. Snatching the lead from Broken Arrows Kayleb Barnett who has been a force all year over 100m winning big races at the John Jacobs Invitational, Edmond North Husky Hustle and Choctaw Yellow Jacket Invitational. Barnett's Tiger teammate Cooper Wakely has been a swiss army knife this season with a resume that includes the #5 200m time of 21.57 (enroute to beating many top 200m athletes), #9 400m effort of 49.53, the #2 pole vault mark of 15'0 as well as legs on Broken Arrows #2 ranked 4x2, and 4x4 squads. 

    We can't talk about Oklahoma sprinting and not mention the Redhawks of Tulsa Union who have too many quality sprinters to list. But we'll do so anyway, this season Tulsa Union has the #3,#15, and #17 100m times, the #1, #2, #6, and #7 200m times, the #1, #2, and #19 400m times, the #4 110mh and #14 300mh as well as the #1 ranked 4x1, 4x2 and 4x4 relay teams. Tulsa Union will rely on this core group of guys in their bid for the team state title.

Distance

    Gatorade XC state athlete of the year Brody Woodcock has kept his momentum rolling into the spring with only one loss on Oklahoma soil at the hands of XC state champion Zachary Rutherford. Woodcock holds state leads in the 1600m (4:11) and 3200m (9:07) as well as helping the Deer Creek boys to a state lead and OK #3 all-time 4x800m relay (7:50). Other names in the distance events to keep a lookout for is of Zachary Rutherford of Edmond North who has posted best of 4:21 and 9:11 this season. Trae Baker of Tahlequah who leads the 800m with a best of 1:53.5 and #7 1600m 4:22.8. Lastly we can't forget sophomore sensation Noah Thayer of Mustang who has 1:54.8 800m wheels and OK #2 1600m performance of 4:13. 

    Some smaller school (4a and below) athletes that rank high are Demarion Dean of Heritage Hall with his 1:55 800m best, Clay Mckinney of Regent Preparatory School with his 4:26 1600m, and Corbin Galt of Perkins with his 9:43 3200m. 

Field Events

    The Oklahoma boys much like the girls have a couple nationally ranked field eventers to note heading into the post season. First up is Jack Kieth of Collinsville who is 25th in the shotput with a 61-11 best Kieth also leads the state in the discus with 182-0 best. Next up is Graham Murphy of Heritage Hall who has tied his PB from last year with a 6-10 clearance good for #15 in the nation. Last but not least long jump national leader Elgin High School's Niqualas Chew who has a best of 25-3.5 inches which is just 1.25in short of the State record. Chew has been trending upwards jumping further seemingly by the week and I think he could threaten the state record by the end of the season.
