ECU men capture Tiger Chase

 

ADA (Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007) – East Central University freshman Daniel Kiptoo out-distanced teammate John Sutrick by 34.3 seconds as both finished first and second respectively while fueling the Tigers to the team title of the annual 8-kilometer ECU Tiger Chase Saturday at the Pontotoc Technology Center.

Kiptoo, the newcomer from Kenya, clocked in at 27:27.9 while Sutrick, a junior from Sapulpa, finished in 28:02.2.

ECU finished with a team score of 18, followed by Cameron at 51, Oklahoma Baptist at 71 and Southwestern Christian University at 106.

Four other Tigers actually finished in the top 10. However, senior Matt Appelman, who was seventh with a time of 29:04.5, competed unattached.

Junior Jacob Bussell finished fifth for ECU by clocking in at 28:35.4. Freshman Joel Dutton was eighth in 29:14.6 and Kolin Styles ended up 10th in 29:52.6.

Also for the Tigers, Alejandro Garcia (competing unattached) was 11th in 30:05.1, Tyler Jackson was 12th in 30:22.6 and Kendall Styles (also running unattached) was 13th in 30:24.7.

ECU’s Jim Sutrick, also competing unattached, finished 15th in 30:37.9, Stefan Terrell was 22nd in 32:15.4 and Carl Williams was 24th in 32:30.9. Codie Woods, also of the Tigers, ran unattached and clocked in at 33:17.9.

WOMEN

ECU senior Betty Hernandez finished fifth with a time of 20:10.3 in the 5k women’s race as the Lady Tigers settled for third in the team standings.

Southwestern Oklahoma State’s Stefanie Jones and Rachel Ingram finished first and second with times of 19:27.2 and 19:48.4, respectively.

However, it was Central Oklahoma, behind four top 10 finishers, that took first with a score of 35, followed by SWOSU (40) and ECU (47). Southeastern Oklahoma State sent just four runners and were not eligible to collect points.

Sarah Reihart finished seventh for the Lady Tigers after clocking in at 21:06.0. Teammate Silvia Barkechir was 10th in 21:41.5.

Also for ECU, Angela Ingram ended up 12th in 22:25.3, Alex Kirkpatrick finished 13th in 22:26.5, Sarah Brunk was 15th in 23:21.1 and Valerie Navarro took 16th in 23:32.3.

Lauren Hicks finished 18th for the Lady Tigers in 23:48.6, Jenna Burns was 19th in 23:57.9 and Aimee Schmidt ended up 26th in 27:30.9.

The next competition for the ECU teams will be Saturday at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo.
