In what was maybe the fastest Moore War Run ever, many high schoolers in the area competed at the staple road race. It was a warm day that brought out some very strong performances.
Placing 1st overall was Dominic Matthias from Moore. Matthias is now a junior, and he officially opens his season up with a 14:44 5k on the road. The defending state champion is off to a great start this season as he continues to push his times closer and closer to the low 14s. This is an average of 4:44 per mile.
Notably, Matthias managed to negative split this race. Starting out in 4:53, then running 4:45 for the 2nd mile, Matthias managed to come through the 3200m mark at roughly 9:38. He closed in 4:37.
It is very possible we see Matthias run under 14:30 on the course this fall. He has the speed and the aerobic capability to have a real chance at it. Currently, Kevin Schwab holds the cross country 5k record at 14:44.80. This was achieved at Chile Pepper, where Matthias ran 14:47.50 last year. Matthias is in a strong position to take the number one spot.
Ryan Walker also ran very well. He ended up running a 15:22, which was good for 3rd overall. Walker has been a consistent force for Southmoore, but now he is running for Moore. Walker is a name to watch as the season progresses. He could very well break 15:10 this season. These two athletes have the ability to achieve a lot this season. Stay tuned for the team battle as well. With top end talent like this, Moore has moved up in the team rankings.
