Madness at the Nike Outdoor Nationals this Thursday! Moore Sophomore, Dominic Matthias, places 3rd overall in the 5000m. His time? 14:21.49. This is an elite level performance for Matthias, who has continued his consistency at an all time high level.
It seems that the speed work that comes with training for the 800, 1600, and 3200 has played off nicely for Matthias at this increased distance. As Matthias goes into his junior season, it is going to be fun to watch what he is able to do next.
Let's break down his splits:
His first 1k was 2:56. A very solid first kilometer for this event. Once he got to 3k his time was 8:37. His ability to work the middle of races like this is part of what makes him such a talented runner.
It will be interesting to see how this translates into cross country. There will be a handful of meets where the course will be mostly flat. Even the state meet itself is not too particularly challenging, so we may see a sub 15 performance at the state meet. Whatever happens, it will be great season for Matthias and all of the Oklahoma XC community.
