Courtney Occhiuzzo, a freshman out of Chisholm High School has had a sensational season so far. During the fall XC season, she managed to win the state title as only a freshman. At the RunningLane XC Championships she ran a 17:54.97, which is the freshman record for this distance.
During the indoor season this year, she ran two impressive marks of 5:04.91 in the one mile and 10:50.60 in the 3200 meters. Already running a sub 5:05 mile and a sub 11 3200 is a great sign for the potential that she has.
So far during outdoor season she has improved on those times by quite a lot. She's ran under 11 twice, with the highlight being the 10:27.57 at the ASICS Carolina Distance Carnival. If we are going off of time, this is the state record. It is officially the fastest any high school girl has run in Oklahoma at this distance. However, since it is out of state, it may not count towards official state record lists. Either way, it feels likely that Occhiuzzo can run under 10:30 again.
At that same meet she ran the 1600m and the one mile run. During the 1600m, she ran a 4:57.09, which is a freshman record and tied for the best in time in the state. She joins a short list of high school girls in the history of Oklahoma running that have broken 5 minutes with placing at 10th overall. She ran a 4:58.88 in the full one mile race as well. She has proven to be consistent at these distances and can very well run even faster.
Occhiuzzo has a bright future in this sport and it is always awesome to see the underclassmen perform at such a high level. She will be a name to watch as we get to the state meets and any summer track meets. She is the current favorite in every distance event at her division, and has a good shot to become a multiple time state champion this summer. Congrats to Courtney Occhiuzzo for a great track season thus far!
