Boys' 2-Mile Heat 1
Dominic Matthias didn't just make the long trip from Moore, Oklahoma, to College Station worthwhile; he made it unforgettable. Competing against one of the deepest distance fields assembled this indoor season, the Moore High School sophomore delivered a poised and powerful performance to finish third in the boys 2 mile at the Texas High School Indoor Championships, stopping the clock at 9:08.70. In a race that doubled as a rematch between Texas standouts Ruel Newberry and Griffen Saacke, Matthias inserted himself squarely into the conversation, proving he belongs on the national stage despite being one of the youngest athletes in the field.
From the opening laps, Matthias showed zero intimidation. He passed 818 meters in 2:18.30, right in line with Newberry (2:18.44) and Saacke (2:18.67), and remained glued to the leaders through the mile, hitting 4:32.48, actually faster than Saacke at that point. Even as the pace intensified over the third 800, Matthias continued to apply pressure, reaching 2418 meters in 6:51.74, still well within striking distance of both runners. While Newberry ultimately surged away to a US No. 1 performance, Matthias fought all the way to the line, finishing just 0.04 seconds behind Saacke and narrowly missing the meet and facility records that had stood since last year. The effort was a complete race-controlled early, aggressive in the middle, and resilient late.
That result fits perfectly into the trajectory Matthias has been building since his breakout freshman year. This past fall, he took another leap forward in cross country, clocking a 14:47.50 PR at the Chile Pepper Festival, then winning the OSSAA 6A state championship and placing fifth at NXR South.
On the track, his resume is already staggering for an underclassman: 1:53.23 in the 800, 3:56.31 in the 1500, 8:26.34 in the 3000, a 4:17.24 PR in the 1600, and a 9:14.55 state title in the 3200. His 9:08.70 indoor two-mile now puts him within striking distance of the Oklahoma state record of 8:56.07, a mark that suddenly feels very attainable.
Matthias has shown a rare willingness to travel anywhere, race anyone, and compete fearlessly, and that mindset continues to pay dividends. Just as he followed a strong freshman cross country season with a breakout sophomore fall, all signs point toward another leap on the track. After his performance in College Station, one thing is clear: Dominic Matthias isn't just visiting big meets, he's contending at them, and his name is one distance fans across the region will be hearing often in 2026.
