Ben True 13:02.74 for 5k at Payton Jordan Invitational, Riley Masters wins 1500m 3:38.42

A couple of Maine native now running professionally put on a show at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford University on Sunday night. Ben True used a late kick to edge by Hassan Mead in the 5k as True ran a world #1 time, and shattered his personal best by almost 9 seconds as he crossed the line in 13:02.74. The time moves him to US #9 all-time. In the 1500m, Riley Masters used his strong kick in the final 75 meters to capture the fastest section of the 1500m, with a 3:38.42 which is a world #2 time.

Coming off a strong performance at the BAA 5k road race where he finished 2nd to Dejen Gebremeskel running 13:26, Saucony's Ben True had the confidence heading into the 5k at Payton Jordan that he could make a run at a sub 13 minute 5k. True followed the rabbits as they took the pace through 1600m in 4:11. Ben continued to follow the rabbit, Dan Huling as he took them through 3k in 7:52, and 3200m in 8:23. Once Huling dropped off Ben took the pace for a lap and half, before moving out into lane 2 to have someone else take the pace. It was a veteran move, and one that would pay dividends later in the race. At the bell, Ben was in 3rd, and looking smooth. As they hit the back stretch he moved into second place with 200m to go. OTC's Hassan Mead made a huge move on the turn sling shoting from 3rd into the lead as a small gap open. True responded by moving into second place as they hit the top of the homestretch. It looked like True might run out of track but he had just enough in his legs as he edged past Mead in the final meters to earn a .06 win.

For Ben it was an almost 9 second personal best, as his previous best was a 13:11.59 from last year. The mark moved Ben to #9 all time in the US, and the time currently is a world leader. True now has his eyes on a sub 13 effort at the Prefontaine Classic on May 31st

Masters ran a smart and patience race as the Brooks Beast sponsored runner put himself in a good position early on, and was able to move into 3rd place as the bell rang for the final lap. Coming through 1100 meters in 2:41.46, the former Umaine/Oklahoma star ran a 56.96 final lap, and was able to seize the race in the final meters. The time broke the Payton Jordan meet record of 3:39.08, held by former Colorado State star Bryan Berryhill. Masters got a big scalp as the second place finish Henrik Ingebrigsten was the 5th place finisher in the 2012 Olympics.

The performance is the fastest in the US this season for Riley, and currently ranks him #2 in the world. Masters his hitting on all cylcinders early in the year, his first race was a 5k at Mt Sac, where he ran a 41 second personal best en route to a 13:39.47
