Deer Creek Mile Night Preview

Deer Creek Mile Night Preview

This year's Deer Creek Mile Night is set to be a classic. With a total of 6 sections of the girls races and 8 for the guys, this is a great opportunity for athletes to get a fast mile in before state. Beginning at 6pm and going till about 9pm, this meet will roll pretty quickly. Each race is set to occur ten minutes after the last, and to top it all off, the final heats will be under the lights. An under the lights mile is always an electric experience for both athlete and spectator. Highlighting the boys top heat is three sub 4:20 miles and a plethora of 4:20-4:30 guys.

Leading the charge, and the closest to potentially contending for a state record attempt, is Deer Creek's Brody Woodcock. This season, Woodcock has clocked multiple sub 4:20s with his fastest of 4:11.23. With the state record being 4:09, Woodcock has the opportunity to make history. Behind Woodcock is the pair from Mustang, Noah Thayer and Cameron Langdon. Thayer has clocked a 4:13 earlier this year, and will look to contend with Woodcock for the win. Langdon has run 4:17 and isn't far off from these front two leaders. This will surely be a competitive race regardless of time.

For the final heat of the girls section, Morgan Kirkland from Edmond North is the favorite. She has run 4:58 this year and will surely look to improve on an already fast time. Behind Kirkland is Kinley Kite from Norman North. Kite has run 5:01 and has high potential to run sub 5. There have been four athletes run sub 4 this year, and to have a potential fifth with Kite is huge for Oklahoma running.

Mile nights like these are great for our sport. There are always a ton of personal bests set throughout all of the heats and many athletes have major breakthroughs. The energy is electric and it just further proves how great the running community is here in Oklahoma. Stay tuned on Milesplit Oklahoma and okrunco's instagram for updates and content from Deer Creek Mile Night this Friday, 4/26/24. Good luck to all the athletes competing Friday night!
