Becky O'Brien of Cumberland, Maine had her breakthrough performance today at the US Indoor Track & Field National Championship as the former Greely HS star threw a lifetime best 60-2 to finish as the national runner-up in the shot put.

O'Brien got better with each throw in the preliminary series with a 54-1 3/4 effort, her second throw improved 55-9 3/4, and on her last throw of the prelims she improved to 57-9.

On her first throw in the final, Becky had her best effort of the day a 60-2 mark which vaulted her into second place. The throw was a personal best improving on her previous best of 58-3 thrown in January at the New York Armory. O'Brien would also put one more throw out over 60ft with her final effort of 60-1.

Coming into the meet, O'Brien ranked 17th in the world but with her personal best effort today moved all the way up to 6th.


In the men's mile Riley Masters of Brooks finished 5th overall running 4:03.82. The race was a sit and kick affair with as Riley took over leading duties at 600m, and took the field through in 2:08.60. The pace quicken after that as Masters continued to lead through the 1k in 2:39.72. He was able to cover the final 4 laps in 31.13, 28.80,(59.93) 27.86 & 27.45 (55.31) good for a 1:55.24 last half mile.


Also competing was Ethan Shaw of the BAA in the 2mile, shaw finished 11th running 8:46.16.
